Cristian “El Loco” Gonzales took advantage of an error by Philippine goalie Neil Etheridge to head the ball into the net to bring hosts Indonesia to a 1-0 lead in the first half of the semifinal leg of the AFF Cup at the Bung Karno soccer stadium.
Unmarked Gonzales scored with a header at the 31st minute after a lopsided ball from Indonesian captain Firman Utina fell into the Filipinos' defense.
The red-and-white team had its first chance to score at the 10th minute when Gonzales managed to shoot a goal thanks to a cross ball from Okto Maniani from the left wing.
The Azkals, who rely on well-coordinated attacks and individual skills, struck with James Joseph Younghusband's long-ranged on-goal shot at the 13th minute, penetrating Indonesia’s defense, but failed to go past the last bastion under goalkeeper Markus Horison.
